1. Poughkeepsie Couple Wins $10 Million — Largest Scratch-Off Cash Prize in State History
James and Sylvia Silverance of Poughkeepsie claimed a $10 million top prize on the "$10,000,000 Cash" instant game, released to mark the New York Lottery's 50th anniversary — at the time, the largest cash prize ever paid out on a scratch-off in state history.
James, an elevator company employee, had put $125 from an earlier lottery win toward six of the $30 tickets, purchased at a convenience store near the couple's home. It was Sylvia who uncovered the word "jackpot." The couple split the prize, each taking home a check for $3.31 million after taxes, and said they planned to put part of it toward their four sons' education costs.
2. Uniondale Man Wins the Same $10 Million Prize — Twice
Juan Hernandez of Uniondale became one of the rare players to hit the same life-changing number two times over. Hernandez first cashed in a "$350,000,000 Cash Spectacular" scratch-off for a $10 million top prize, then, three years later, matched the exact same amount again on the New York Lottery's "$10 Million Deluxe" game, where the odds of winning the top prize were roughly 1 in 3.52 million. For his second win, Hernandez chose the lump sum option and collected a check for $6.5 million after required withholdings.
3. Brooklyn Man Wins $5 Million on "$300,000,000 Cash Payout"
Adam El-Asha of Brooklyn claimed a $5 million top prize on the New York Lottery's "$300,000,000 Cash Payout" scratch-off, purchased at Tang's Amber Mini Mart in Brooklyn. El-Asha opted for the lump sum payment, receiving $3,061,207 after required withholdings rather than spreading the prize out through installment payments. At the time of his win, one additional $5 million top prize remained available on the game.
