Scratch offs go back to the rise of the Minnesota Lottery, when the state developed a massive culture around paper pull tabs. In 1978, Minnesota officially legalized raffles, paddlewheels, and tipboards, which raised millions of dollars for local veterans’ clubs, youth sports, and food shelves.
In 1988, voters approved the allowance of a state lottery, and the first official scratch offs went on sale in April 1990. Now there is a dynamic range of existing scratch offs available in this state at any one time, from $1 to $50 games (the price of scratch off tickets caps at $50).
The largest top prize on any scratch ticket currently sold by the Minnesota Lottery went to a player who bought a $50 Casino Millions ticket at a Cub Foods in Maplewood, claimed on August 19, 2026. The game offered just six $1,000,000 top prizes when it launched, with odds of 1 in 243,300 of landing one. Winners can take the prize as a 20-year annuity of $50,000 a year or opt for a lump-sum cash payment. Under Minnesota law, the names and hometowns of lottery winners claiming more than $10,000 are not made public, so the player's identity was not released.
A $20 Top Secret Crossword ticket sold at a Kwik Trip in Owatonna hit one of only three $300,000 top prizes built into the game, at odds of roughly 1 in 529,017. The win was claimed on September 1, 2026 — the same day the game officially closed to new ticket sales. As with all winners above the state's $10,000 disclosure threshold, the player has not been identified publicly.
A ticket bought at the Cash Wise Foods in Waite Park won one of fifty $100,000 top prizes offered on the Minnesota Lottery's $50 "Money" scratch game, claimed September 1, 2026. Top-prize odds on the game were about 1 in 24,326. The winner's identity likewise remains private under state disclosure rules.
