The first Arkansas scratcher was sold on September 28, 2009. It is not known whether the ticket was a winner as Jim Purcell, the man who bought it, preserved the tickets in a frame as historic souvenirs. The lottery distributed over $250,000 in total prizes on that very first day.
Scratch-off tickets have been a massive financial success for the state, serving as the dominant revenue driver for the Arkansas Scholarship Lottery since its inception in 2009. The Arkansas lottery has raised $8 billion in total sales, with scratch-off tickets contributing to most of that lifetime revenue.
Since the 2020s, big scratcher wins have turned into a near-weekly feature, with players getting $50,000–$500,000 payouts from various games.
