George Coffroad became the biggest scratch-off winner in the history of the Virginia Lottery when he claimed the first top prize of $10 million in the 100x the Money game back in October 2016. Coffroad bought his ticket from Landmark Towers Sunoco, 190 South Whiting Street in Alexandria, and tossed them on the floor of his car before scratching it later and discovering the big win. He initially thought it was incorrect, before the realization settled in. He chose the cash option of $5.6 million before taxes rather than the $10 million as a 30-year annuity, and described it as a ‘game-changer’ for him going forward.
Joseph K. Heaton also won $10 million, this time on the Extreme Millions scratcher in February 2020. He bought his ticket from Sudley Shell at 7025 Sudley Road in Manassas and scratched it right away. Approaching the store clerk, he just smiled when asked if it was a winner. The clerk tried to guess the amount of the prize and suggested a few numbers, but Heaton just kept replying, ‘Higher…higher.’ He decided to take the cash option rather than the annuity.
