New Mexico’s first scratch-off tickets hit stores on April 27, 1996, when the New Mexico Lottery launched with two instant games – the $1 Match 3 and the $2 Big Fun, Big Help. The response was immediate. During the lottery’s first eight days, players purchased roughly 8.3 million tickets, generating $10.6 million in sales.
Scratch-off games quickly became one of the biggest parts of the New Mexico Lottery. By fiscal year 2002, instant tickets accounted for nearly 61% of total lottery sales, with players claiming more than $51.4 million in scratcher prizes that year alone.
The prizes grew substantially over the years. In 2001, New Mexico launched its first $10 scratcher Lucky Luminarias, which had a $100,000 prize. Eventually, $500,000 scratchers were launched in the Land of Enchantment, and in 2005 instant-ticket players claimed more than $57.9 million in prizes overall.
Today, large scratch-off wins continue to appear across the state. New Mexico Lottery records show winners collecting prizes of $5,000, $25,000, $50,000 and more, with dozens of winners regularly added to the lottery's public winners list. Current games also feature top prizes reaching $100,000 and $200,000, depending on the game.
